The King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC) is an independent, non-profit research institution dedicated to researching energy economics, policy, technology, and the environment across all types of energy. KAPSARC is located in Riyadh, where its facilities are currently under construction.
KAPSARC’s mandate is to advance the understanding of energy challenges and opportunities facing the world today and tomorrow, through unbiased, independent, high-caliber research for the benefit of society. The overall objective of the Center is to create value that contributes to the wellbeing of society and humanity. This focus on societal benefit is woven throughout the Center’s research activities.
The Center is legally, administratively, and financially independent. It reports only to an internationally-composed Board of Trustees, is advised by an International Advisory Council, and is financed by an endowment the proceeds of which cover the activities of the Center in perpetuity. This empowers the researchers to conduct independent, fact-based research without the need to raise capital and without the pressure from external funders or donors.
The research programs are holistic and integrated, connecting a range of disciplines, from economics and policy to statistics and the environment. The Center emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach that draws on data from around the world, including Saudi Arabia and the region, so that its research can provide a comprehensive, global picture.
KAPSARC creates value by publishing fact-based research that facilitates a strong foundation and buttresses constructive dialog between stakeholders, maintaining one unifying ethos: no advocacy, just objectivity. The Center does not advance the particular agenda of any stakeholder, whether consumer versus producer, developing or developed economy, industry or NGO. Its focus is on conducting multi-disciplinary research founded on evidence that provides both public and private sectors with options, not opinions.
KAPSARC is a meritocracy, drawing the best talent from Saudi Arabia and the world, irrespective of gender or nationality. In fact, the Center emphasizes diversity, and its small but rapidly growing team is both multi-national and gender-diverse. KAPSARC is attractive to researchers who value creating new knowledge rather than rehashing old ideas, who desire to leave a lasting legacy that benefits society, and who crave a thriving, creative environment with top-notch talent from around the world.
KAPSARC’s office facilities are currently under construction. Due for completion in the first quarter of 2014, the Research and Office Complex (ROC), designed by the world-renowned Zaha Hadid, will be one of the iconic landmarks of Riyadh. Its large campus contains modern and stylish offices and various facilities including: an Energy Knowledge Center, Conference Center, and an Energy Computing Center. Interlaced between are beautiful walk ways and common areas that promote interaction and the sharing of ideas.
KAPSARC is more than just about research. We also support a growing community and culture with an adjacent Residential Campus (REC). Just a few minutes walk from the ROC, within the borders of KAPSARC, the community has its own social, communal, and sporting facilities, including a range of housing for employees. This self-contained living space is also embedded in a broader metropolis of six million people. Residing in Riyadh, employees and their families can enjoy the benefits of the Kingdom’s capital city.
