The Green Transition and Tech Firms’ Financial Performance: Insights from Patent Data

The Green Transition and Tech Firms’ Financial Performance: Insights from Patent Data

The twin green and digital transitions are shaping the global business environment. However, academic research exploring the financial implications of the green-digital nexus remains limited. This paper explores the financial implications of a key mechanism within the green-digital nexus: technological connectedness through knowledge creation and spillovers. Quantified through patent data between 2010 and 2022, this study examines how technology, or “tech,” firms’ financial performance is affected by knowledge creation and spillovers to “green” (clean energy) technologies and “brown” (fossil fuel) technologies. The study employs portfolio- and firm-level analyses with panel data regression models. The results indicate that, contrary to the results of aggregated-level studies in the literature, the dynamics of financial connectedness is not straightforward. While firm-level heterogeneity in knowledge creation results in abnormal returns, there is no conclusive evidence that knowledge spillovers affect tech firms’ financial performance.

The Dynamics of Variable Renewable Energy Integration: A Multi-Dimensional Framework for Future Power Systems

The Dynamics of Variable Renewable Energy Integration: A Multi-Dimensional Framework for Future Power Systems

This paper examines the impacts of integrating a high share of variable renewable energy (VRE) on power systems and markets, proposing a multi-dimensional framework to analyze its technical, economic, and regulatory challenges. A structured literature review and topic modeling are employed, and key constraints, incentives, signals, and risks associated with VRE integration are identified. The authors then propose measures to address the key challenges posed by VRE at different stages of system penetration. The analysis is illustrated with practical examples from diverse electricity systems worldwide, demonstrating a common set of solutions applied across different countries, each with distinct legal, regulatory, and technical contexts. A holistic approach – combining technological innovation, adaptive governance, and coordinated policy – will be crucial for ensuring an affordable, reliable, and sustainable electricity supply in a VRE-dominant future.
