Abstract

Renewable energy (RE) technologies are viewed as a critical means of reducing power sector-related emissions. Using mixed-integer optimization, we evaluate the extent to which renewable energy reduces carbon emissions in the Saudi power sector.

Credited with 40+ papers and several patents, Amro holds a Ph.D. in electrical engineering and an MBA in finance.

He holds a master’s degree in power system economics, with a focus on electricity markets, from the KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Idaho. Before joining KAPSARC, Hatem worked within various industries. He interned at ABB Västerås in Sweden, where he worked on electric vehicle asset management under the Swedish transport administration's electric road systems project. Hatem also worked at Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories in Washington state, where he modeled speed governors and prime movers for hydro and gas turbines.

Salaheddine Soummane

His current research focus includes modeling the… Salaheddine is a research associate in the Energy Transitions and Electric Power program. His current research focus includes modeling the Saudi electricity market, including its reforms and regulatory framework. Prior to joining KAPSARC, Salaheddine worked as a research associate for the Centre for International Research on Environment and Development (CIRED), a National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) lab, based in Paris, where he focused on integrated economy-energy modeling. He has also worked as an economist researcher within the research and development (R&D) department of the utility group EDF (Paris). He was part of the group’s energy markets and environmental regulation unit focused on emerging markets. Salaheddine holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Paris-Saclay University (France), an M.Sc. in Energy Economics from the University of Montpellier (France), and an M.Sc. in Finance from the Aix-Marseille School of Economics (France).

Prior to joining KAPSARC,… Frank is an engineer, energy policy analyst, and Program Director for Energy Transitions and Electric Power. Prior to joining KAPSARC, Frank was a Research Professor at the School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University, Director of the Rutgers Energy Institute, and Director of the Center for Energy, Economics and Environmental Policy. In those roles, he conducted original and applied research in the areas of electric power system modeling, clean energy policies, and climate change for academic foundations, government agencies, and energy utilities. He has also worked as an economic consultant and nuclear engineer.
