This Instant Insight provides a review of two key global datasets that can be used to track GHG emissions and removals from the AFOLU sector. The first dataset, FAOSTAT, is developed and maintained by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN and builds on data reported by countries to the FAO. The second dataset, here referred to as the NGHGI dataset, is a dataset that builds on countries’ national GHG inventory submissions to the secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. There are important differences in these two datasets. This paper presents a brief analysis of the differences and similarities between the two datasets, discussing how they are compiled, the sources of data used, assumptions made, and their inherent strengths and weaknesses.
