Decarbonizing offshore oil and gas platforms can reduce a notable share of upstream emissions, but these assets are capital-intensive, and such investments are vulnerable to major uncertainties. This paper uses real-options analysis to evaluate the financial feasibility and economic opportunity cost of decarbonizing five Saudi offshore oil fields with renewables and gas and carbon capture and storage (CCS) options.
