Project Aim

This project aims to build knowledge around the measurement of GHG emissions in Saudi Arabia through the following six objectives:
Provide an overview of UNFCCC MRV requirements, with a focus on the Saudi context:

  • Review the lessons learned by countries concerning MRV.
  • Generate timely estimates of GHG emissions for CO2, CH4, and N2O (i.e., a national GHG inventory) for Saudi Arabia for the most recent time period.
  • Compare approaches, methods, and estimates of GHG emissions in Saudi Arabia.
  • Generate detailed and disaggregated baseline emission projections for Saudi Arabia.
  • Act as a hub for both national and corporate estimates of GHG emissions in Saudi Arabia.

Key questions

  • What are the current guidelines and requirements for measuring and reporting GHG emissions? How have they evolved?
  • What are the lessons learned from the experiences of countries with MRV? What are the main challenges they face in the transition to the ETF?
  • How large are GHG emissions in Saudi Arabia in the most recent year / quarter / month?
  • How do different estimates of GHG emissions for Saudi Arabia compare? How do different approaches for estimating GHG emissions compare? What role can satellite imagery and remote sensing play?
  • What do the emissions trends in Saudi Arabia look like? How are baseline emissions expected to evolve?
