Raising women’s participation in STEM studies in the Kingdom, ranking among the top world energy research centers and growing online Arabic content
In celebration of the fifth year of the accession of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, HRH Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, KAPSARC is highlighting its top achievements since King Salman inaugurated the Center in January 2016.
KAPSARC has taken significant steps in addressing current and future energy challenges in support of the Kingdom’s efforts toward diversification of the economy and energy resources.
As KAPSARC has continued to grow, we have maintained our commitment to developing a talented and diverse team. The 135 professional staff come from 20 different nations. KAPSARC has succeeded in increasing the number of women who work in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields in the Kingdom, with women representing more than 30% of the Center’s workforce.
This year the Center was ranked 17th out of 60 top Energy and Resource Policy think tanks globally. The prestigious University of Pennsylvania survey also ranks KAPSARC in the upper half of all think tanks in the Middle East and North Africa.
During these years, KAPSARC has published 324 publications included 76 peer-reviewed articles on most vital energy and economics topics. These studies are now available in both Arabic and English. Since the 2016 inauguration, KAPSARC has organized 85 workshops attended by more than 2250 energy experts.
This year the Center launched ten initiatives encompassing 45 active projects on topics of interest to Saudi Arabia and the wider global community. More than 1000 datasets organized around 16 energy, economic, and environmental themes are freely available to researchers around the world.
Since the inauguration, the center has signed collaboration and MOU agreements with 24 research institutes, public policy organizations, and government institutions worldwide. Its partnerships allow it to enrich its research output further, providing local stakeholders with preeminent expert advice.
KAPSARC has been appointed by the Saudi Secretariat G20 as co-leader, with the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies, of the important Think20 engagement group. The appointment is a golden opportunity to present the best recommendations and solutions to G20 leaders across a wide range of issues critical for the current and future economy in the Kingdom and globally.
KAPSARC, in partnership with the Saudi Association for Energy Economics, was selected to host the 2022 International Conference of the International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE). The IAEE is widely recognized as the premier world organization representing energy researchers.
Since its inauguration the center received five awards highlighting the architecture and engineering of the Center:

- World Architecture Community Award
- Described by New York Times® as Environmental Beauty and Efficiency
- Saudi Arabia’s “Smartest Building” in the Honeywell® smart building award.
KAPSARC is a non-profit global institution dedicated to independent research into energy economics, policy, technology and the environment, across all types of energy. The Center is focused on finding solutions for the most effective and productive use of energy to enable economic and social progress nationally, regionally and globally.
