- Mapping the Pathways to Sustainable Transport in Saudi Arabia
Transportation is an important sector playing a significant role globally, with transportation networks serving different nodes of human and economic activity. Given the significant role transportation plays in perpetuating trade, as a sector it also plays a significant role in emitting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and other pollutants with the sector representing 23% of global energy-related emissions in 2019 with 8,700 million tonnes of CO2 (IPCC 2022). Given KSA’s commitment to the Paris Agreement and its overall goal to reach net-zero by 2060, this report seeks to understand the current status of the Saudi transportation sector and the role decarbonizing the sector can play in the overall net-zero journey of the KSA.
